Our Story & Mission

Hand-drawn hibiscus tree with bare branches and blooms, above the words Rooted in Chaos, Blooming in spite of it

Mama Plants is for the gardener who keeps going.

It started with a tree.

Our backyard hibiscus tree in bloom, with bare dead branches still visible at the top

Our hibiscus. Dead wood up top, blooming anyway.

When we moved into our home more than 25 years ago, a hibiscus was already growing in the yard. It's probably more than 30 years old now. Every year it bloomed pink, without fail, and every year I stopped to admire it.

A few years ago, it got sick. It dropped its flowers, then its leaves. Whole branches went brown. We tried different ways to help it. We talked about whether it was time to cut it down and plant something new.

We decided not to give up on it.

Then it bloomed again. You can still see the dead wood up top, and some of the leaves are still yellow. It's blooming anyway.

The morning I saw those flowers, I understood something about Mama Plants. I didn't invent our slogan. I recognized it. Rooted in chaos, blooming in spite of it was never written to fit a brand. It described something I'd already lived.

The year it nearly gave up was a hard year for me too. We're both still here, blooming in our own ways. 🌱

Life is imperfect. I acknowledge it, but I will make it bloom in my own way.

— Founder, Mama Plants

What we believe

Gardens don't have to be perfect. Neither do people.Yellow leaves, leggy stems, and a pot that's too big don't mean you've failed. They mean you're growing something real.

Don't give up too early.A lot of plants that look finished are only resting, struggling, or asking for something different. So are a lot of people.

Good help is honest help. When we teach you something about plant care, we check it against university extension research first. You deserve advice that works, not advice that just sounds good.

Laughter is part of care.Plant life is chaotic. Sometimes a silent, side-eyeing goose says it best.

Bloom your own way. There's no single right way to grow, whether you have one pothos on a windowsill or a backyard full of citrus.

Our mission
